In September 1998, Jon L experienced a "non-survivable" heart attack and passed out while being loaded into a helicopter for hospital transport. While unconscious, he found himself lying in a hospital bed positioned at the beginning of chrome rails extending from the foot of his bed into infinity. The ceiling was navy blue with multiple white crosses. He was lying at approximately a 45-degree angle. Once when looking up, he noticed the crosses were twisting. He felt he needed to make his bed move down the chrome rails.
During this state, Jon experienced complete happiness and total self-absorption where nothing material mattered at all - not money, not sports cars, not even his beloved mother. He felt it was "ultimately ridiculous" to think anything on Earth or material had any importance whatsoever. He then experienced a classic out-of-body observation, standing several feet beside his bed and looking at himself lying there. A nurse began screaming repeatedly "Hey! I'm not getting a breath here!" Though Jon somehow knew it would hurt, he decided to take one breath just to quiet her. When he did, he immediately returned to life, experiencing significant pain and anger toward the nurse for making him come back to pain and earthly problems. He emphasizes there should be absolutely no fear of death, as he felt wonderful and was very resentful about having to wake up. The experience left him with the lasting conviction that nothing material matters at all, a perspective that persisted long after the event. --- Biblical Summary --- Biblical elements: The complete detachment from earthly concerns aligns with Jesus' teaching about not storing treasures on earth (Matthew 6:19-20) and Paul's statement that "to die is gain" (Philippians 1:21).
