On December 15, 1997, John D fell asleep while driving around 5:00 PM and experienced a severe vehicle rollover accident. Coming to on the shoulder heading for a ditch, he overcorrected and found himself sideways in gravel. Knowing he would roll, he yelled "OH GOD!" multiple times before impact. He suffered severe head trauma and was unconscious for an unknown duration, remaining in and out of consciousness until the next morning.
During his unconscious state, John found himself totally aware but in complete void of light, yet still able to see. He was conscious of himself without remembering having a body. The darkness was both right in front of him and far away, like a black canvas with no beginning or end, initially silent. Then the darkness became textured and streaked with ashen grays accompanied by burning, scraping sounds. He heard screaming and crying. Though he never saw what was causing it, with each streak he became more terrified, knowing he wasn't in a good place and that whatever was trying to come through the darkness meant to harm him. John believes he was at "the Devil's doorstep" - given a brief look at where his current path was leading him. He interprets it as being "literally smacked in the head by GOD himself" to get his attention and return to the right path.
