In October 2009, Johan C experienced a complete collapse of his digestive system triggered by an E. coli infection, leading to shutdown of his pancreas, kidneys, and liver, resulting in ammonia poisoning. He was in what medical staff described as a "walking coma" with little recall of a 4-5 month period except for this profound experience. While watching TV, the room went silent and dark despite his eyes being wide open. Time ceased and all senses except his mind's eye were gone.
He found himself in absolute void, like being in the absolute void of space - very black but not frightening, a calm transition. He knew what was happening and wanted to see where the journey led. Then he saw twinkling lights and sensed from deep within something like "Are you sure?" At that moment, he decided he wanted to live and "the battle was on." Death did not wish to let him go, and the experience devolved into what he describes as a bad acid trip. The next moment, a team of doctors and nurses attended to him, though he had not moved. Initially dismissing it as a nightmare, a hospital psychologist pointed out significant details: Johan normally dreams in black and white, but this experience was in Technicolor. The experience left him with absolutely no fear of death, only fear of the pain associated with it. The void experience with conscious choice to return, followed by struggle against death's grip, represents a unique NDE variant. The medical context of multiple organ failure and ammonia poisoning provides a severe life-threatening situation.
