At age 16 in April 1974, Joe A was running track at his high school. As a fast runner ahead of the pack, he turned his head to look back at other runners and when he turned forward again, ran directly into a steel light pole for the baseball field, knocking himself unconscious. During this brief period of unconsciousness, Joe experienced a clear out-of-body experience where he saw himself from above as he lay on the ground. He observed his own body lying there with other boys gathered around him, describing the perspective as floating above the scene.
The experience seemed to last only a few seconds but left him with a strange feeling of seeing himself lying there. When he regained consciousness, boys from both the track team and nearby baseball field had gathered around him. His brother, a senior, drove him home where his parents then took him to the hospital. X-rays were taken and he was sent home, but later that evening he began vomiting blood and went into a coma. The next morning when unresponsive, he was rushed to Oklahoma City University Hospital for emergency surgery to remove a blood clot from the back of his head. He nearly died on the operating table but had no experience during the surgery itself. For years, Joe didn't think much about the experience, having never heard of NDEs at age 16. However, 2-3 years ago (around 2007-2008), he began thinking about it frequently and realized he had experienced an NDE. The out-of-body observation of his unconscious body surrounded by teammates represents the primary veridical element, though this was not independently verified. The experience has left him certain that he experienced something real during that brief period of unconsciousness. --- Biblical Summary --- Biblical elements: The out-of-body experience aligns with biblical concepts of the soul/spirit being distinct from the physical body, as suggested in 2 Corinthians 5:8 about being "absent from the body." The life-threatening nature of the injury and the preservation of life could be seen as divine protection. The experience of consciousness existing outside the physical body resonates with biblical teaching about the eternal nature of the soul. Unbiblical elements: None identified. The experience was brief and contained only the OBE element without any contradictory spiritual claims, encounters with beings making unbiblical statements, or experiences that would conflict with Christian theology.
