At approximately 6 months old in 1943, Joann experienced what she describes as a vivid near-death experience that remained with her throughout her entire life. She found herself floating slowly through a pink and purple atmosphere filled with clouds of the same colors, being carried over someone's shoulder whom she thought was her grandmother. Following behind were two tiny cherubs - very small winged beings with short curly hair, naked and of neither sex, one solid pink and the other solid purple. They fluttered around like hummingbirds, trying to keep her entertained as she laughed and giggled, attempting to catch or touch them.
The scenery transformed into a beautiful landscape of green valleys and hills. To the left, though she could not see it, she heard the laughter of children playing. When she asked if she could go there, a distant voice responded "NO! You're too young!" The atmosphere then changed to brilliant pastel blue with huge golden gates standing in mid-air. Beyond the gates was nothing but brilliant white light. A loud voice, neither male nor female, coming from all around declared "She needs to go back. It's not her time." Years later at age twelve, when Joann brought up this persistent memory again to her mother, she learned that she had indeed died in her grandfather's arms when she was around six months old, apparently from choking on phlegm. Remarkably, Joann also remembered her grandfather holding her, crying and screaming "If you die, I will, too!" Her mother was shocked that she could remember this event from such an early age. The experience included heightened senses with brilliant colors, telepathic communication, and has remained vivid in her memory for over 70 years. --- Biblical Summary --- Biblical elements: The experience contains multiple elements consistent with biblical imagery including cherubs/angels as divine messengers, golden gates reminiscent of the gates of heaven described in Revelation, brilliant divine light representing God's presence, and a divine voice making sovereign decisions about life and death. The green valleys and peaceful landscape align with biblical descriptions of paradise. The concept of it "not being her time" reflects biblical teaching about God's appointed times for each person. Unbiblical elements: The cherubs appearing as naked infant-like beings differs from biblical descriptions of cherubim as powerful, multi-faced creatures. The pink and purple color scheme and playful nature of the beings is not found in scripture. The absence of any mention of God, Jesus, or spiritual evaluation is notable. The experience lacks the typical biblical elements of judgment, redemption, or spiritual transformation.
