Jerry G experienced an NDE in summer 1969 following his second spinal surgery during his third hospitalization. After surgery, experiencing horrific pain, he believed he was dying and told his roommate to call his wife to say goodbye. He lost consciousness after his roommate hit the emergency button. Jerry found himself floating above and at the foot of his bed, observing the medical response. He watched a nurse enter, check for his pulse without finding one, slap his wrist and retry. She called a code, and Jerry observed a nurse, nun, doctor and intern rush in and begin working on him. He watched them transfer him to a gurney and connect him to two machines. Throughout the resuscitation, Jerry floated above watching and listening to the entire procedure until they revived him from shock. He experienced no fear, only the most profound calm of his life. Later, when Jerry recounted the experience verbatim to his roommate Benny, the roommate was amazed at the complete accuracy of Jerry's account, confirming all the specific details Jerry had observed while unconscious. The experience left Jerry certain that consciousness can exist outside the physical body.
