On August 16, 1977, ten-year-old Ashley was building a treehouse when a bully set fire to the surrounding grass. Panicking from the heat and smoke, Ashley fell from the 30-foot tree onto spear-shaped railings, landing face-down on tarmac. His left arm was nearly severed at the elbow, hanging by tendons with bones exposed. Initially feeling no pain, massive blood loss ensued as he went into shock. His vision faded like theater curtains closing to pitch black, then a small white spot grew into brilliant, blinding light that surrounded him. He felt weightless, bodiless, and at one with surroundings filled with warmth, love, peace and serenity - like a baby in the womb. An invisible presence guided him, saying "it's not your time yet!" He found himself in the ambulance with his mother 45 minutes later, with the sirens sounding.
