In June 1951, Janice's car crashed on the Oregon coast. She was thrown from the vehicle, landed between two boulders, and was crushed when the car landed on top of her. During this trauma, she felt her breath leaving and thought "Oh God, I am going to die." She then left her body and floated high above, observing the accident scene from great height. The ceiling disappeared and she watched herself on a trolley in an endless corridor. She saw her twisted right leg, her two crying travel companions, and the ambulance attendant administering aid. Despite witnessing their distress, she felt wonderful, happy, and peaceful, unable to understand their upset. She followed a bright light and experienced intense happiness. She returned to her body after surgery, remaining comatose for days. She suffered extensive injuries including crushed femur, pelvis, and other bones.
