During a routine D&C and laparoscopy surgery in October 1990, Hazel experienced breathing problems that led to an NDE. She felt herself rapidly moving forward through what seemed like a long hallway, then emerged into incredibly brilliant light. Standing before her was her deceased mother, who had passed six months earlier, glowing from within with a beautiful smile. Hazel felt enveloped in indescribable, all-encompassing love and warmth. To her mother's left were three other glowing figures she recognized as her grandparents, with another figure nearby she sensed was her aunt. When Hazel reached toward her mother, her mother lifted her hand and lovingly said "Not yet." Hazel was then pulled back, fighting to stay and feeling the deepest sadness at leaving. She awoke in recovery hitting a nurse while saying "No, I want to stay!" leaving a red mark on the nurse's cheek. The doctor later mentioned breathing problems to her husband.
