Gary experienced an NDE at age 4 in 1963 when he fell headfirst from a second-floor balcony while swinging from the handrail. His two-year-older brother was present when Gary missed the handrail and fell onto the concrete alley below. From an out-of-body perspective, Gary observed his brother standing over his body crying and pulling his hair trying to get him back up the stairs. He watched his mother run down, pick him up while crying, and blow air into his mouth. Gary remembers thinking "why is she doing that, I'm okay" while observing from outside his body. After being in his body briefly and looking up at his mother, he fell into a coma for two weeks. He awoke in the hospital but didn't speak of the experience until age 11, when his mother turned white upon hearing his detailed description. She confirmed all the specific details: his brother crying and trying to drag him up the stairs, and her attempts at mouth-to-mouth resuscitation. During the experience, Gary felt very calm and loved, with incredible peace and joy. The experience gave him a sense of purpose - feeling he was put back on earth to help others, which led him to become a nurse. He also developed psychic abilities, including premonitions about relatives' illnesses or impending deaths and visions of future events. Initially dismissing it as a dream, he now knows it was real and has no fear of death.
