Fred experienced an NDE on July 4, 1976, when he collapsed on the roadside while walking to his parents' house, severely compromised from drug and alcohol abuse. From an out-of-body perspective, he watched police pick up his body from across the street at a bus stop, initially thinking the person was in worse shape than himself. A week later, an elderly woman confirmed the reality of his experience by running up to him, throwing her arms around him, and expressing relief that he was alright after seeing him lying on the roadside.
