Etienne experienced a heart attack on December 17, 2007, resulting in clinical death. He first found himself in a cemetery where his deceased father (died 2003) was sitting on a grave chatting happily with two famous deceased French singers, Jacques Brel and Georges Brassens. His father told him it wasn't his time. He then encountered three beings who explained "the unfolding of all life" with one specifically telling him to remember everything when he returned to earth.
