Five-year-old Allen P suffered a subdural hematoma in July 1975 after flipping over a teenager's shoulder while bike riding and hitting cement head-first. Despite the severe head trauma, he went untreated for eleven days, during which he couldn't bear light and was very drowsy. His family was about to fly to Minnesota when a neighbor neurosurgeon (whose own son had died from similar trauma) urged them to see a doctor. At Texas Children's Hospital, the doctor immediately recognized the emergency and Allen was rushed to surgery.
During the operation to remove a 2-inch diameter blood clot between brain and skull, Allen lost all vitals and brain activity for sixteen seconds. In this time, he saw himself on the operating table from 50-60 feet away in a space with no walls, ceiling, or floor. Both he and a female figure he thought was his sister were wearing white robes. She approached from about 40 feet away, came to the table, patted his knee and said "Everything is going to be ok." He then returned to his body, later waking in ICU. Allen made a full recovery, though he notes five other children he knew died of similar trauma within 24 hours.
