At age twelve in 1958, Don died from an illness and left his body. While floating above his body, he looked at his hands and realized he still had a form. He heard men in the room saying "He sure is young to have to die" but couldn't make them hear him when he tried to tell them he wasn't dead. A small light approached him, growing larger and containing a man who asked "What are you doing here?" and called him by name. The light surrounded both of them with pure love. The being identified himself as Don's brother who had gone away to build a place for him, showing him heaven with golden steps. Communication occurred telepathically without spoken words. Don asked many questions about heaven's location and purpose, all of which were answered. The being told him he had something to do and would have to go back.
