Dick had been drinking alcoholically for 30 years when on December 30, 1989, he consumed a quart of vodka but couldn't get drunk. He collapsed, blacked out, and was taken to the hospital by ambulance. While on a table being attended by doctors, he suddenly found himself floating at the corner of the ceiling and heard a doctor say "We're losing him." He then turned and found himself in a tunnel of light that was bright yet soft around the edges. Proceeding through this tunnel, he encountered a figure who told him "Go back; it's not your time" and "You have had enough," which he understood meant alcohol. Despite not wanting to return, he reluctantly retreated. He woke up in a hospital bed completely at peace and sober, hearing his own voice reciting the first step of AA. Since that day, he has not had a drink or any desire to drink, maintaining sobriety for over 20 years at the time of his account.
