In July 1977, at age 8, Debbie was at a hotel pool in Florida with her family. While standing at poolside looking into the deep water, she felt herself in a trance-like state and leaned further over until she fell in. Unable to swim, she found herself underwater looking up at a safety rope right beside her but couldn't make her hand grab it. Her confusion turned into an extraordinary out-of-body experience that would profoundly impact her understanding of life and death.
Suddenly, Debbie was outside her body, looking at herself floating limp in the water with her hair floating around her head, eyes open with a frozen look of shock. Rather than fear, she felt overwhelming peace and curiosity. Looking up beyond the rope, she saw a fuzzy white circle of light in the distance (distinct from the sun which she also saw). She communicated telepathically with the light, thinking "Oh no not yet please! I like this one and I'm not ready yet." Simultaneously, she experienced a profound knowing - she understood everything she had ever wanted to know. She knew that whatever happened in life would be fine, that all experiences good and bad were just that - life experiences. The unconditional love she felt was so strong she almost didn't want to leave it, but she knew she would be with it again and that she belonged with it. Debbie chose to return to her body, then everything went black. She awoke at the pool's edge with people yelling, then water rushed painfully from her lungs. She cried all day, not from the trauma but because no one would listen to her experience and she had lost that loving connection. Her stepfather had pulled her out after a few minutes underwater. The experience left her unafraid of death, knowing there's a reason for her being here though unsure what it is. She developed temporary floating dreams or possible OBEs until age 10. --- Biblical Summary --- Biblical elements: The out-of-body experience, encountering divine light representing God's presence, receiving supernatural knowledge and understanding, experiencing overwhelming unconditional love, knowing she belonged with the light and would return to it, and the transformative loss of death fear all align with biblical concepts of the divine encounter and eternal life. Unbiblical elements: The experience lacks explicit Christian content - no mention of Jesus, angels, heaven or hell. The suggestion that all experiences are equally valid without moral distinction could conflict with biblical concepts of sin and righteousness. The telepathic communication and subsequent floating dreams/OBEs might be concerning from a conservative perspective.
