On April 20, 2003, David underwent open heart bypass surgery. The morning after surgery, as the fog from anesthesia and morphine lifted, he began humming "Nantucket Sleigh Ride" by Mountain - a song he hadn't heard for almost thirty years. Then he started remembering an extraordinary experience during the surgery when his heart was stopped.
David recalled looking down on an open chest with a heart lying still. He then saw two probe-like instruments touching the heart, at which point the memory stopped. This brief but vivid recollection was of viewing his own cardiac surgery from an out-of-body perspective, observing his stopped heart and the moment of electrical cardioversion. When David went to have his staples removed after a week, he asked the surgeon if Mountain had been played in the operating room. The surgeon's response was remarkable - he asked "Looking down or the light?" indicating immediate recognition of an NDE. The surgeon confirmed that many of his patients report these experiences and verified that he had indeed played a Mountain CD during David's surgery.
