In July 1977, David ran a mini-marathon on an extremely hot day exceeding 100 degrees. He became increasingly impaired trying to finish until he collapsed from heat stroke. He awakened in an ice bath with worried faces, presumably doctors, observing him. He was acutely aware of being in grave peril as his heart and temperature were racing dangerously. The medical situation was touch-and-go as doctors worked to save his life.
Suddenly, David found himself watching doctors working over a body on a table from outside his body. He was either floating above or had the recollection of being behind large glass doors. He was desperately willing them NOT to pull the sheet over "that poor schmuck lying there," who happened to be himself. He fought to prevent them from giving up on his body. Then suddenly he was back in his body, feeling his racing heart and temperature. In his panic, he had forgotten to have faith, but once he remembered to have FAITH, he could palpably feel himself slowing down, cooling down, and becoming peaceful with certainty he would be alright. Immediately after returning, David began lecturing and testifying to everyone present about the importance of faith, though the doctors later recalled this with amusement. He hallucinated that his parents and old teachers were present. The experience left him physically depleted for about a month with loss of appetite and trouble walking upstairs. He also had two previous specific out-of-body experiences where he clearly left his body and roamed while watching himself sleep.
