In December 1971, David was aboard the USS Coronado when he experienced a medical emergency after having blood drawn. Having felt unwell for days with fever and no appetite, his pulse dropped rapidly after the blood draw - an adverse reaction he'd never experienced before. The medical staff worked frantically as he was "slipping away quickly," with someone stating "We're going to lose him." During this crisis, David had a profound out-of-body experience.
He found himself suspended about four feet above the medical table, watching the frantic activity below while immersed in bright light that extended equally to his sides. Despite the medical team's panic, David felt completely at peace and knew he was okay throughout the episode. He distinctly recalls thinking "Well if you doctors would just do this (or that) I would in fact be fine," though he had no medical background. He knew exactly what they were doing wrong but cannot recall the specifics. The medical staff's voices sounded distorted and distant, as if transmitted through a hollow cylinder or tin can with open ends. David experienced a profound sense of peace unlike anything before or since in his life. He could view everything with a 360-degree perspective, observing the medical staff working on his physical body below. He's certain the staff had no idea he was above them witnessing the revival procedure. After recovery, the medical staff was angry when he told them he hadn't eaten for a day. David believes this experience showed him the reality of Mind/Spirit and has maintained conscious contact with God since 1991.
