In July 2000, David was on a car trip with his wife when he had to stop due to severe illness with sudden sweating, precordial and neck pain. He was taken by ambulance to the hospital where he suffered a myocardial infarction followed by cardiac arrest. He was resuscitated with a defibrillator, requiring fourteen shocks to restore normal rhythm. He experienced a progressive loss of consciousness, feeling himself sinking down into a vortex while maintaining clarity of perception despite feeling alarmed and distressed.
After a period of absolute nothingness, David suddenly became conscious during an electric shock and awoke outside his body, finding himself in a not well-defined tunnel. He moved weightlessly through it, progressing from initial darkness toward gradually increasing light. While he saw no specific forms or objects, he felt the reassuring presence of incorporeal beings or souls he sensed were deceased relatives or friends in close contact with him. They gently pushed him in one direction. His emotional state was one of indescribable bliss - like heat without temperature but made of love and total satisfaction. The experience ended suddenly when he found himself back among the medical team.
