On December 3, 2009, Dan experienced a massive "widow maker" heart attack at midnight in his home - a total blockage of the LAD with ventricular fibrillation. His last memory was being placed in the ambulance after receiving a nitro pill. He was defibrillated twice in the emergency room, airlifted to another hospital for angioplasty and stent placement, and remained unconscious on a respirator for two weeks with his heart ejection fraction down to 10%. His physician son-in-law gave him less than 10% chance of survival.
During his unconscious period, Dan found himself in what he described as "heaven's front yard" or garden. He was in a short line speaking with Jesus, who was taking unlimited time with each person despite the line. Dan was amazed at the grace, unconditional love, and freedom he felt. He witnessed Jesus speaking with someone who had not been a Christian by religion or birth on earth, but was being given the opportunity to choose at that moment, which Dan found fantastic. There was awareness of a doorway or portal to heaven on his right, though he did not pass through it. The experience was characterized by incredible peace, joy, and love. Upon awakening after two weeks, Dan immediately tried to share his experience, though he couldn't speak or write initially due to his condition. His first coherent words to family were "I died and went to heaven and it was wonderful." The experience left him with renewed faith and a personal understanding of God's grace.
