On December 9, 1969, Dan experienced a sudden cardiac event while talking with friends. He felt his heart race increasingly fast before it stopped completely. The experience began with a frightening sensation of being pulled away from the scene as reality receded in smaller concentric squares. Dan underwent a comprehensive life review where he not only saw events from his perspective but experienced every action as it affected others. He literally felt the concentric circles of emotion rippling outward - experiencing how his actions affected John, how John affected Ray, how Ray affected Sam, and so on through every interconnected relationship. This empathic experience of feeling the impact on others was profound and sometimes painful.
After the life review, Dan was shown how every person, thought, action, and word are interconnected in a vast web of stars existing in multiple dimensions. The interconnectedness appeared as a luminous network spanning eternity. He kept asking "what is the point?" throughout these revelations. Suddenly, he found himself in the presence of a great ball of light resting in the palm of an enormous hand. In this presence, he experienced pure bliss and understanding. The experience ended abruptly as he was pulled back to find his friends discussing which hospital to take him to. This was a deeply impactful experience for Dan, though he was initially frightened by it since Kübler-Ross was not yet famous and NDEs were not widely known. He sought psychiatric help but found little assistance. The most meaningful aspect was experiencing what others felt because of his actions, which fundamentally changed his perspective on interpersonal relationships.
