Cheryelle had been in a severe car accident 3-4 days prior and was hospitalized at her workplace. She was moved from ICU to Progressive Care Unit for discharge planning. During an attempt to insert a central IV line, she told the surgeon she was going to pass out. A nurse had mistakenly hooked her up to compressed air instead of oxygen, and she went into pulseless ventricular fibrillation requiring resuscitation.
During the cardiac arrest, Cheryelle experienced the most profound peace she had ever felt in her life. Her deceased mother was there to meet her and told her she had to come back, that she was not through yet. This was the entirety of her NDE - a brief but powerful encounter with her mother and overwhelming peace. Upon return, Cheryelle was angry about being brought back to live in pain and has struggled with severe depression since. She reports no one understands her depression and she wants to die every day just to feel that peace again. Her statement that she wants to die every day to feel peace suggests the experience provided false comfort rather than biblical hope and purpose for living.
