Charlie was driving his girlfriend to Kennedy Airport when they were struck head-on by a drunk driver. His girlfriend Marilyn was killed on impact, the drunk driver died days later (which Charlie mysteriously knew would happen). Charlie was thrown 30 feet from the car with 13 broken bones, 300 stitches, and required 20 units of blood. Once in the ICU, he went into cardiac arrest.
His spirit accelerated upward through the ceiling into a tunnel/path leading to an all-knowing, all-loving, peaceful light. The tunnel had silhouettes of beings beyond an undefined boundary with unintelligible sounds. He experienced 360-degree vision in this profoundly beautiful place without pain, feeling one with all. He had a past life review before stopping for unknown reasons. Charlie then found his spirit floating at the ICU ceiling, searching for something. He observed a patient with very high fever and another with head bandages. He then saw intense activity around a bed and came over to discover it was his own body. At that instant, he "burst" back into his body, returning to awful pain. He realized he had been given a choice between life and death. Charlie knew the drunk driver would die in a few days though he didn't know how he knew this. His veridical observations included seeing other ICU patients (one with high fever, one with head bandages) from ceiling perspective and knowing the drunk driver would die days later, which occurred. --- Biblical Summary --- Biblical elements: The tunnel of light with peaceful, loving presence aligns with biblical near-death accounts. The life review reflects biblical concepts of life examination. The 360-degree vision and unity with all creation could represent glimpses of divine perspective. His transformation to value love and understand spiritual beauty reflects biblical spiritual awakening. The experience strengthened his conviction about the afterlife. Unbiblical elements: Charlie's shift from Catholicism to no religious affiliation, believing "we are the sum total of God collectively," reflects pantheistic rather than biblical theology. This view that humans collectively comprise God contradicts biblical teaching about God's transcendence and separate personhood. His rejection of traditional religion in favor of universal spirituality suggests the experience led toward new age beliefs rather than biblical faith.
