Charles had been taking medication for his heart and blood pressure. While planting tomatoes outside with Sara, he became dizzy and struggled to speak. He went inside to sit at the dining room table, leaning increasingly to one side. Sara reported that his heart stopped, he ceased breathing, and released a final gasp of air.
During the cardiac arrest, Charles experienced complete darkness with no light at all. He was floating above his body, which appeared to glow in an orange or gold color. He initially thought "Oh I am on the other side" and then heard the words "leave me." From that moment, he saw his body again and realized he was floating. Notably, he observed that the constant ringing in his ears (tinnitus) had completely stopped while out of body. He then "zoomed" back into his body. Charles's primary veridical observation was his glowing body viewed from above during the period his heart had stopped. He also noted the complete absence of his chronic tinnitus while out of body, which returned immediately upon re-entering his physical form.
