Cheryl suffered from severe Crohn's disease and had recently survived a coma. Against medical advice, she checked herself out of the hospital. Within a week, her lungs filled with bacteria and fluid, producing visible white flakes. During a medical appointment, she experienced severe breathing difficulties requiring four hours to reach the doctor's office. She collapsed in the parking garage and stopped breathing with her heart ceasing function.
She instantly found herself in another place, surrounded by a warm glow of peaceful, loving light that was bright but not painful to view. She had no physical form but retained her identity. The feeling was one of complete bliss, euphoria, and connection to a whole - like being home again. She then experienced soaring over snow-capped mountains like an eagle. When paramedics administered IV and oxygen, she felt a rush back into her body through what she perceived as a circular entry point in her abdomen. The return brought intense physical pain in contrast to the euphoria she had experienced. She was conscious briefly before lapsing into her second coma. The experience transformed her from atheist to believer in a higher power.
