Brenda experienced clinical death during complications while giving birth to her third child. She floated around the hospital cubicle observing from above, feeling she had separated from the "shell" of her body below. In this state, she experienced herself as her true essence - all-knowing, filled with universal compassion and goodness. She could read the thoughts of the medical staff, sensing the older nurse's concern beneath her barked orders and understanding the emotions of everyone present. She observed the medical emergency from various angles, floating at filing cabinet height, and willed her body not to hurt too much. Her spirit was described as a bright cloud of light. She heard both the spoken words and unspoken thoughts of the medical team, experiencing machinery sounds and alarms while maintaining complete awareness. The experience occurred in 1979, before NDEs were widely known or discussed. Neither the hospital nor doctor would provide information about the event, and family members attributed it to drugs, though Brenda insisted this was not a drug-induced experience. She felt the presence of a spiritual being she identifies as God, who was in control and all around her. The experience permanently eliminated her fear of death and gave her certainty about where she's going after death. She emphasizes that the divine presence can be called different names (Jehovah, Allah, Buddha) but is the same being. She now lives as the best person she can be because of this experience.
