On August 16, 1980, Bess was on the operating table after a terrible car crash that nearly severed half her right foot. She passed out and began walking toward a peaceful light through a tunnel, experiencing tremendous joy. As she approached the tunnel's end, she heard an older man's voice saying it was not her time yet. She then awoke on the operating table, hearing doctors and nurses saying she was waking up, before they administered anesthesia to knock her out again. The experience was characterized by a tunnel of white light that was very bright and soothing, described as beautiful. She felt incredible peace, happiness, and unity with the world. The emotional impact was a tremendous sense of peace and happiness. She experienced heightened awareness and the ability to read people afterward, along with frequent déjà vu experiences. The experience has remained vivid and meaningful to her, shared only with family and close friends who believe her account.
