In May 2004, after five months of declining health (weight loss from 190 to 140 pounds, severe pain, minimal food intake), patient collapsed during routine hospital appointment and fell into coma. Upon awakening in wheelchair, experienced severe headache later identified as stroke from bacterial endocarditis - heart valve infection causing valve fragment to lodge in brain.
