Valerie, a flight attendant, contracted a white angina bacterium that damaged her heart valves. After misdiagnosis at a suburban hospital, she was transferred to Paris where she felt herself fade away upon arrival. In critical condition at another hospital, she had multiple experiences during cardiac arrests indicated by heart monitor alarms.
First, she saw herself as smoke in a concrete swimming pool-like space, turning clockwise with another presence (possibly a comatose patient from the neighboring room). She couldn't see her body parts, only smoke. In another experience, the ceiling became a bulgy cloud she climbed into, feeling fine but knowing something was wrong. A young bearded man appeared, and when she asked when she'd return to earth, he replied "But you are already on earth," which she didn't believe.
