Peter experienced a pulmonary embolism following spinal surgery. His life appeared on a screen above him viewed from a "fly on the wall" perspective rather than through his own eyes. Upon reaching the present moment, he saw his face from beside the bed and realized he was dead. He then stood waist-deep in the ocean facing the beach, engulfed in compassion for humanity and feeling oneness with everyone. A voice taught him through call-and-response that the meaning of life is to love others more than yourself, that humanity is connected like a chain viewed from its weakest link. He understood humanity is judged by its worst examples - mass murderers and child molesters - not its saints. The words "To the most innocent" stayed with him. He returned to his body surrounded by medical personnel and was sedated. The experience illuminated him with life's meaning and awareness of collective human responsibility.
