Vern, a Royal Signals member stationed in Cyprus, suffered a severe head injury on November 28, 1974, when he tripped and struck his head forcefully against the sharp corner of a steel soldier box. He felt incredible pain for a fraction of a second, then stood up feeling no pain whatsoever. He walked around the barrack room, clearly seeing other occupants sleeping despite the darkness. He attempted to wake others but knew somehow he could not. He sat at a table working on a child's puzzle about matchsticks to pass time while waiting for someone to find him and get medical attention. The dawn light appeared strangely golden or yellowish with limited visibility. He walked back toward his bed space, looked at someone sleeping, then lost consciousness. He awoke on December 3rd to learn he had been found after 5 AM with hypothermia, having died twice - once in the ambulance and again in the operating theatre.
