During a hysterectomy under general anesthesia, Miriam remained conscious but unable to open her eyes or move when monitors alarmed and the doctor said they had lost her. She heard him tell an aide to inform her husband and to sew her up. Desperately wanting to tell them she was still there but unable to communicate, she experienced rapid scenes of her life with family, children, husband, and colleagues. Beautiful music surrounded her, bringing resignation and peace. In what seemed like hours but was only seconds, she saw her 20-year-old son against a wall with her sister-in-law asking about her husband, who was "better now." She realized hours had passed and they were discussing her death. She felt the pain her death was causing everyone and determined to return despite the wonderful peace. Terrible chest pain began building as she willed herself back. The life scenes reversed, she heard them say she had returned, and awoke being taken to recovery. The doctor later dismissed the incident as an anesthesia reaction. The experience taught her about life cycles and her special purpose of helping guide others at their time of passing.
