During a scheduled operation at Thomas Jefferson Hospital in Philadelphia for injuries from a criminal attack, Michael's heart stopped for approximately 20 minutes. Medical staff were preparing to declare him dead when his heart spontaneously restarted. During the cardiac arrest, while under anesthesia, he found himself floating above his body in the operating room corner, watching staff perform CPR and various interventions. He wondered what they were doing before leaving the OR and floating toward an intensely peaceful light. There was no fear or pain, only happiness and complete bliss. He saw figures near the light he believed were his grandmother and great-grandmother. He was heading toward them happily when suddenly transported back. Upon waking, he was extremely upset and angry about returning from the peaceful light where there was no pain. He wanted to stay with the light where he was happy. A year later, his physician received the operative records and told him he was lucky to be alive, confirming the cardiac arrest and near-death status.
