Michael stopped to help a stranded boater on a rainy Texas highway in 1973. While examining a frozen trailer bearing, a Greyhound bus hydroplaned on the wet shoulder, heading directly toward them. He saw the water beading under the bus tire and tried to run but was struck, suffering multiple tibia/fibula fractures and a shattered kneecap. While spinning through space, everything went black and he felt himself hurtling through a tight tunnel approaching what appeared to be a nerve synapse. As he expected to jump across the synapse, he clearly heard "not yet" and found himself on the ground. Despite severe injuries, he never lost consciousness and directed his own ambulance transport. Remarkably, his insurance statement later described details he could only have known if observing from above and behind his physical location. The experience gave him greater self-confidence and purpose, leading him to organize his life plan. He came away believing he hadn't yet achieved his purpose in life.
