In 1963, five-year-old Michael was in a camping tent fire that killed his mother and several cousins. His mother died after heroically throwing children from the burning tent. Michael sustained severe burns and head trauma from hitting a picnic table. Doctors didn't expect him to survive. While in a coma with family gathered for last rites, Michael experienced walking with his mother in beautiful light toward a source of great goodness and love. Just before entering the light, his mother knelt, hugged him, told him she loved him and it wasn't his time yet. She then crossed into the light alone. Michael then observed his hospital room from outside his body, seeing his father, grandmother, and a priest performing last rites. A nurse expressed surprise when he emerged from the coma. This shared NDE allowed him to accompany his mother partway into the afterlife due to their extraordinarily close bond. He believes this was permitted so he would know she was in a good place.
