During recovery from minor surgery under general anesthesia in 1982 or 1983, Norma experienced asthma and slowed her breathing to prevent wheezing from worsening. Suddenly paralyzed from the neck down, unable to move arms, legs, or diaphragm, she struggled for breath until she no longer needed to breathe. Great peace came over her as her consciousness lifted to the upper right corner of the room. From there, she watched the scene below with indifferent wonder about how surprised her sons would be to learn of her death, as she hadn't told them about the surgery. She observed and heard nurses suddenly realize the problem: "Look at those splotches on her face!" "She's not breathing!" They called for the anesthesiologist and began chest compressions. She was suddenly back in her body as they injected adrenaline into her groin. The next day, the doctor simply said she hadn't taken the anesthesia well. The experience left her knowing death is pleasant and strengthened her faith and family relationships.
