In September 1963, while swimming at a beach in Algeria against his father's orders, Mustapha was caught in a current and pulled underwater. Despite struggling and calling for help, he was drowning and swallowing seawater. Suddenly, he found himself floating peacefully within the water, observing his own body from outside with incredible calmness. His vision was nearly 360 degrees, with intense luminosity allowing him to see underwater details clearly - ochre-colored pebbles, striped stones, seaweed, and small translucent fish. He watched his body floating beneath the surface with bubbles emerging from its mouth. Then the body's arms suddenly beat the water with incredible force, propelling it waist-high out of the water. This happened twice before his brother and cousin reached him and pulled him to shore. He vomited and was seized with panic, shivering with the realization of his near-death. The experience of total serenity while observing his drowning body remains vivid, along with the mystery of how his arms could beat the water with such superhuman strength to signal for help.
