Twelve-year-old Mari Luz experienced an NDE in 1973 after striking her temple on an iron bar while playing basketball at school. She immediately found herself floating above the schoolyard, observing fellow players weeping and crying out. From a position to the right and above, she watched her teacher kneeling over a girl on the ground, slapping her face trying to revive her. Approaching to ask what was happening but receiving no response, she realized the unconscious girl with vacant eyes and open mouth was herself. She observed the entire schoolyard with great clarity - children by the fence, comments about the incident, students entering/leaving the playground, and passing cars. Suddenly drawn into darkness by something or someone, she felt increasing comfort and pleasure intensifying the further she moved from life. Realizing this drift from life, she chose to return. Upon waking, she immediately asked about her mouth and eyes, confirming what she had observed. The experience left her without fear of death, understanding it as something not to be feared.
