Malina B, a Type 1 diabetic, experienced an NDE in May 2007 during a severe hypoglycemic episode. After taking insulin for an anticipated dinner that was delayed, she collapsed at her parents' home while acting intoxicated-like from low blood sugar. She recalls standing, telling her parents she felt unwell, then collapsing while conscious, seeing carpet without blinking, hearing echo-type noise and parents shaking her. After seizures began, she found herself in complete darkness except for a brilliant central light. In this light, her living niece was dancing joyfully and singing. The niece appeared distant but happy. Malina felt highly emotional and began crying, feeling simultaneously sad about leaving her niece yet good about the experience. Her parents later confirmed her eyes never closed and tears streamed down her face. She awoke to EMTs and firefighters administering IV sugar water. The experience made her feel at peace with death and her disease.
