Laurent B, nearly nine years old, was swimming in an unsupervised boat area at Moutchic Lake in France during summer 1979. Unable to swim properly, he was dog-paddling in shallow water when he suddenly reached a drop-off into deep water. He immediately lost footing and began drowning, swallowing water and sinking rapidly.
During the drowning, he experienced a classic out-of-body experience, seeing himself from above as his own "twin" struggling and drowning underwater. He felt weightless, calm, serene, and peaceful with no panic or pain - just a spectator feeling "very good indeed." He observed himself flailing underwater from an outside perspective with complete visual clarity. A white glow approached and grew until it became a total whole, engulfing everything. He may have reviewed parts of his early childhood like a movie, though this memory is uncertain. He experienced incredible peace, joy, and unity with the world, with time having no meaning.
