Suzanne developed life-threatening blood clots in her lungs from smoking and birth control pills. Initially misdiagnosed with pleurisy and sent home, she returned unable to breathe and collapsed in the emergency room. She lost consciousness and found herself in a wide tunnel filled with very bright light. She repeatedly called out for her mother in a whisper, each time hearing a soothing male voice saying "Don't talk, save your energy." A tiny figure appeared at the tunnel's end, growing larger as she continued calling for her mother. When she awoke, her mother was standing at the foot of her hospital bed. The male voice remains a mystery as no doctor was present when she woke. She kept the experience secret for years fearing being thought crazy. Since the NDE, she experiences ESP abilities and extraordinarily vivid, realistic dreams. The experience left her feeling fundamentally different, seeking more solitude.
