JennZ, who had chronic asthma and bronchitis and was still smoking despite a chest cold, experienced a severe coughing fit after lighting a cigarette while driving on a rural Vermont highway. The coughing became so intense she couldn't breathe and passed out while driving. During the minute she was unconscious, she experienced moving rapidly through trees with bright sunlight shining through them. She came upon a big white house under a brilliantly blue sky with a flower garden and white sheets blowing on laundry lines. When she looked into what appeared to be a laundry basket, she discovered a baby inside. Her friend's urgent screaming of her name started distant but grew louder, and though she wanted to continue the vision, she felt catapulted back to reality. Her friend had put her leg over JennZ's to hit the brake and taken control of the steering wheel, averting disaster. What felt like at least an hour to JennZ had only been about a minute. She experienced profound calm for the rest of the day, quit smoking, and no longer fears death as much. She believes the baby in the basket may have been herself as an infant.
