At age seven, Jerry was struck by a car while crossing a highway to get cigarettes for his brother. After being knocked down by a neighbor's car backing out, he attempted to cross the street when a distant car suddenly hit him. During the accident, Jerry experienced a classic out-of-body experience where he observed his body lying on the street from above while people gathered around him. He heard bystanders saying to get his sister, and upon hearing this, he willed himself back into his body. The experience included seeing himself from above and hearing conversations while apparently unconscious. Jerry described feeling like he was looking down at people who were looking down at him on the street, describing himself as "all but dead." He consciously chose to return to his body after hearing the bystanders' comments.
