On July 26, 1974, this man was shot at close range with a shotgun during a violent crime. He ran 100 yards before collapsing in the street. He experienced an out-of-body state, seeing himself lying on the ground with people around him. He knew he was going to die. Instead of a life review like a movie, he experienced complete awareness of every negative interaction with others in his life. He knew if he remained, he would feel and experience every harmful thing he had caused others, knowingly or not. The collective emotional pain was overwhelming and frightening. He then found himself with paramedics who kept him conscious to prevent deep shock despite losing five pints of blood. He survived four surgeries over 31 days in the hospital. He was shot with four pellets the size of .32 caliber bullets. When he regained consciousness in intensive care, he knew he would live and told his distraught family so.
