Edie experienced an NDE during childbirth of twins in March 1964. She had high blood pressure and severe fluid retention. During delivery, she was awake when her daughter was born at 3:18 am, but hemorrhaged after her son's birth at 3:23 am. During the NDE, she traveled horizontally along colored lights with sounds, each color having its own unique sound. She had no body awareness but was fully conscious of her identity. She remembered this wasn't a new experience - she had been through this before. She moved through rows of lights until reaching gray lights, then entered a dark tunnel moving toward a bright light. At the tunnel's end, a bright multi-colored figure resembling a cartoon Joker with a gentle smile caught her and said "Back to the womb," turning her around and sending her back. She lost memory gradually as she descended. Upon waking in recovery, she initially thought she had triplet girls (a dream under anesthesia), then realized she had twins. Years later she learned "womb" also means "earth." She believes this may connect to a previous NDE at age 5 during tonsillectomy when she stopped breathing.
