Doug underwent surgery in 1985 that resulted in life-threatening complications. During surgery, his throat collapsed and pressure reversed in his lungs, causing them to fill with blood and leading to drowning in his own blood. He was in convulsions and had to be paralyzed to be placed on a respirator. During this clinical death, Doug found himself floating in complete blackness, feeling lucid and clear-minded. He was wearing white and felt no pain, only curiosity about his situation. After waiting in the void and calling out, he became angry at being abandoned. He then observed medical staff working on his body from above, watching for at least five minutes while not breathing. He could see through his eyelids and watched them intubate him before losing consciousness again. The experience left him with many questions about why he ended up in a void and whether that was his destined afterlife. It took ten years before answers started being revealed through subsequent out-of-body experiences.
