In May 2001, Cedric suffered cardiac arrest at his parents' house, was taken to hospital, and placed in an induced coma. Doctors told his mother he had an 80% chance of not surviving, with no brain activity and machine-assisted heartbeat. He miraculously woke the day they planned to discontinue life support. During medical testing when his heart rate was artificially increased to 280 bpm, he felt he would faint and "let go." He then slowly climbed toward the ceiling with tunnel vision (clear center, blurry sides), experiencing no thoughts or feelings for 5-6 seconds. He was violently pulled back down at unnatural speed when doctors defibrillated him, leaving a burn mark on his chest. The experience was brief but utterly real, particularly the violent return to his body. He was told he had been extremely violent with medical staff while unconscious, claiming they were torturing him. He now has an implanted cardiac defibrillator.
