At age nineteen, Charis attempted suicide by taking 100 sleeping pills at home. She was found unconscious and rushed to the emergency room where she remained unconscious for a week. During this time, she experienced a clear out-of-body experience, floating above her hospital bed and observing her body from above, positioned head-to-head with her physical form but not touching it. She distinctly remembers thinking "Wow. I'm really dead" though no words came out, only thoughts. The experience was remarkably clear despite her unconscious state, and she was surprised to wake up still in the hospital bed with people around her. Upon awakening, she had no memory of being taken to the hospital or the week of unconsciousness, only retaining the vivid memory of floating above her body.
