At age 10, Carlos experienced severe hemorrhaging in his gum following a dental abscess. After fainting in a hospital elevator and being treated, he later fainted again in the bathroom. During his NDE, he found himself floating without a body but with an "I" consciousness, feeling disconcerted yet too real to be a dream. He then found himself in a room where his mother and an aunt (who was not present at the hospital) were weeping inconsolably in brightly colored maroon armchairs. Upon realizing he was dead, he felt indescribable peace and wellbeing. He traveled through a long, narrow passageway ending at a door with a glass panel showing a coffin he believed was his. He regained consciousness in his aunt's arms as she placed him on the bed. Notably, he was in the same hospital room where he had been born 10.5 years earlier.
